Down in the Dumps Tour
For years, the city of Chicago shipped all municipal waste to the Southeast Side, creating unsightly formations along the Calumet River and Lake Calumet. From 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Aug. 10, tour these operations and learn how Chicago deals with garbage, sewage and waste treatment in general. This narrated tour highlights the Southeast Side's overabundance of treatment facilities, huge landfills, recycling centers, Metropolitan Water Reclamation District waste water treatment plant and sludge drying fields as well as several former notorious illegal dumps. All tours depart and return from Chicago Cultural Center. Cost includes lunch at local establishment. Comfortable walking shoes recommended. Call to register.
