Hammond NAACP annual luncheon "Jazz and More"
The Hammond NAACP Branch hosts their annual luncheon. Dr. Greta Pope will provide a 40-minute presentation and concert, "Paris Noir ... American Jazz in Paris." The concert chronicles the history of African-American jazz artists as they took their music and culture to Paris during the early–mid-20th century. The presentation not only looks at the music of the era, but it also celebrates the accomplishments of African Americans in science, medicine, literature, and so much more. There will be several community members and leaders recognized at this event, including Lonnie Marcus Randolph, member of the Indiana Senate, representing the 2nd District; attorney Barbara Bolling, a member of the NAACP national board of directors from Gary; 3rd District Councilman Anthony W. Higgs, of Hammond; the Rev. Herman A. Polk Sr., of New Hope Missionary Baptist Church, Hammond; and Owana Miller, Hammond’s community development director.
