Volunteer Workday

Event occured on Sat, May 10 2014, 10:00 am - 3:00 pm CDT

Shirley Heinze Land Trust will host a volunteer workday at Keith Richard Walner Nature Preserve May 10. This 40-acre site along the Little Calumet River is one of the organization’s newest acquisitions. The majority of this preserve consists of high-quality floodplain forest that is nearly free of exotic species with a nice diversity of native grasses, sedges, and forbes. On this volunteer workday, staff and volunteers will use a variety of power and hand tools including chainsaws, brush-cutters and loppers to remove a small population of exotic species found on the uplands of the site. A power tool safety training will take place before beginning the work. Take Hwy 49 to Indian Boundary Road. Travel West on Indiana Boundary to N. Calumet Rd. Turn right (north) on N. Calumet Rd. Travel approximately 1/3 mile to W. Taylor St. Turn left (West) on West Taylor St.  Park in the Deer Run Apartment Complex parking lot. Look for the “Volunteer Workday” sign. Lunch will be provided. Volunteers are requested to RSVP their attendance and indicate any dietary restrictions to: jerdelac@heinzetrust.org
