Measuring Democracy

Social scientists are often faced with the task of measuring intangible concepts such as economic liberalization and happiness. Dr. Coppedge will report on an ambitious international effort to measure components of democracy in every country from 1900 to the present. This kind of data will be useful both to researchers examining the causes and consequences of democracy and to development agencies which need tools to help them evaluate their democracy-promotion efforts.
