Mary Schroeder celebrated her 100th birthday on Nov. 20 at Avalon Springs Health Center in Valparaiso, where she resides. Celebrating this huge milestone in her life was her daughter Pam (Bruce) Balsley, and grandchildren Kevin, Keith, Brent Balsley and Kim Trepton. Her great-grandchildren, Kyle and Rebekah Balsley and sister Jay Dilley, also joined the celebration. A second birthday celebration hosted by Mary's nieces, Laura Hormuth and Kathy (Rich) McFate was held at Avalon Springs on Dec. 3. Attending was niece Karen Kallok and nephew Don (Marilynne) Dilley. Her sister-in-saw Barbara Clifton, caregiver Liz Steuer and other relatives and friends joined the celebration. Mary was born on Dec. 5, 1916, and grew up in the Tolleston neighborhood of Gary. She graduated from Horace Mann High School. She lived many years in Gary before moving to Highland. Mary and her late husband Gilbert enjoyed traveling in the western U.S. and visiting state parks in Indiana.
