Biehl leads Trojans on and off-the field
CHESTERTON | Once Rosie Biehl was voted captain of the Chesterton girls soccer team before the season started, it didn't take too long for the junior to start sounding like her coach.
Ask Chesterton coach David Galloway who leads the team in goals and he'll tell you about "Trojan Goals." Ask Biehl how many goals she has this season and she'll also talk about "Trojan Goals."
"It's just something that Coach (Galloway) talks about and now we're all talking about," Biehl said. "We have a lot of goals and scoring goals is one of them. It doesn't matter who scores, they are all Trojan Goals."
By being voted as a captain, especially as a junior, Biehl has become an extension of Galloway. Chesterton captains meet with Galloway to discuss all kinds of topics, and when something isn't working on or off-the-field, the captains are the ones who hear about it first.
"Captains do a very good job of handling what I consider to be a lot of pressure," Galloway said. "I demand a great deal from the captains and by the end of the season, I think they'd tell you that they don't want to be captains."
Galloway's joking aside; Biehl has embraced her role as a team captain, just as she has embraced her role as a scorer. Despite their emphasis on the team's productivity over an individual's, the Trojans do keep track of individual goals/ Biehl leads with eight.
"I knew being a captain was a big responsibility and it's a big honor from my teammates," Biehl said. "I encourage them the best I can and I love that they can always come and talk to me about anything."
As prolific as Biehl has been as a scorer this season, the junior has added a helping hand on several of her teammates' goals with four assists, including an insurance goal from Bridget Brendza in overtime against Lake Central last week. The win, coupled with Crown Point's loss to Valparaiso, enabled Chesterton to enter a three-way tie for first place in the Duneland Athletic Conference.
"All we wanted was a chance (to win a conference title)," Biehl said. "We know that we can't take any team lightly. We have two conference games left and we have to go hard at those games."
With Biehl leading the offense and the team, Galloway is excited about the current state of the Trojans as well as the future. Biehl has another year on varsity and Brendza will be around for two more years.
"This is becoming a very special group," Galloway said. "I look at this as more of a replenishing. I personally expected us to be good and this group is becoming special."
