CROWN POINT | With a family background that includes a legend in Crown Point High School golf, freshman Grant Miller already had an advantage coming into high school that few golfers his age can relate to.

Miller is the younger brother of 2007 Crown Point grad Terra Miller, a four-time state qualifier with the girls team who played at Illinois State University.

With that kind of family history, the younger Miller knows he has a lot to live up to.

"She obviously set the bar pretty high," said Miller, who has been playing competitive golf since he was 5 years old. "Hopefully, I can maybe go beyond what she had set. I'm happy she was the one I could resort to. She was so inspirational in helping my game."

If Miller's success this season is any indication, he may be well on his way to becoming an elite high school golfer, like his sister.

He recently shot 38 twice on nine-hole rounds, and carded a 78 at the Ulen Invitational Saturday in Lebanon.

Crown Point coach Jon Haas had some idea of what type of talent he was getting with Miller, but his achievements as the No. 5 golfer for the Bulldogs have also been a pleasant surprise.

"He's light years ahead of where most freshmen are as far as experience and composure," Haas said. "I knew coming in, we had a pretty good fifth player. There's a big difference between playing individually in those (summer) tournaments and stepping up and having four teammates count on you. That 78 Saturday; I think that's going to be the round that gets him rolling. I think the more he plays, the bigger and stronger he gets; his scores are only going to continue to get lower."

The nerves were present in Miller's first match this season at Rock Hollow Golf Club in Peru, but a solid 18-hole round of 84 gave Miller something to build off of, and his scores have only been getting lower.

In a varsity lineup that includes three seniors, a sophomore and Miller, there are no weak links.

On Saturday at Lebanon, the Bulldogs shot 301 as a team, finishing fourth. It's competition like that that will help prepare Crown Point for the postseason.

"We've been trying to get out of (playing in the) DAC so we get away from playing the same teams over and over again," Haas said. "The golf in Indiana is ridiculously good. You're going to have to be right around par as a team to get to state. I think we have the team that can do it; it's just the matter of doing it on the right day."
