LAKES OF THE FOUR SEASONS | The Crown Point boys golf team handled Friday’s adverse weather conditions better than any other team at the Boone Grove Sectional.
Led by medalist Pat Mudd’s round of 75 and Mike Lee’s 79, the Times No. 5 Bulldogs finished with a team total of 330 in the wind and rain to claim the championship at Lakes of the Four Seasons Country Club. Each of the five C.P. golfers broke 90, the only team in the field to do that.
“All the kids did a good job,” Crown Point coach Del Kutemeier said. “We were expecting to shoot well here today, and the weather conditions were not ideal.”
No. 8 Boone Grove finished second, and Merrillville took third. All three teams will compete in the LaPorte Regional at Beechwood on Friday.
Mudd, who was even par after the front nine, bogeyed the second hole before making back-to-back birdies at the third and fourth holes. He finished with three total birdies on the round.
“I made a couple of clutch putts throughout the round that really gave confidence to me,” Mudd said.
Lee’s round of 79 tied for second along with along with Merrillville’s Naim Muhammad. The Bulldogs also got rounds of 87 from Casey Kitchen and 89 from both Luke Lambert and Matt Mudd.
“It’s a great feeling,” Kutemeier said of the victory. “We’ve been working at that. The last couple of years we have been one or two strokes away from it.”
Drake Devereux led Boone Grove with a round of 86. The Wolves, who had won the five previous sectional titles, finished with a team score of 354.
“I just don’t think our kids played with mental toughness today, to be honest with you,” Boone Grove coach Gary King said. “I think our scores should have been a lot better.”
Muhammad’s round of 79 was best for the Pirates, who finished with a 377 score.
“I got up and down a lot,” Muhammad said. “I missed a lot of one- and two-footers, but my chipping was good.”
North Newton’s Selby Bord, South Newton’s Wes Cook and Lowell’s Jared Cottingham qualified for the regional with the best scores on non-qualifying teams.
Lowell finished in fourth place, while North Newton was fifth, Hobart sixth, South Newton seventh, and River Forest was eighth.
