CHESTERTON | Matt Holba had a quiet first three quarters for Chesterton on Friday night, but turned things up a notch in the fourth quarter.
Holba assisted on a 3-pointer from Chris Palombizio that started a run that helped the Trojans build a 12-point lead that they did not relinquish in a 70-54 win over LaPorte.
The win snapped a three-game losing streak for Chesterton (10-8, 7-6 Duneland).
Palombizio’s 3-pointer started a 13-4 run that gave the Trojans the lead at 62-50 with 3:28 to play.
Holba had six points in the run, including a thunderous dunk in transition.
Chesterton had three players score in double figures, and five had at least nine. Palombizio led the way with 17. Jacob Andert added 16, while Corey Rusboldt had 12. Holba and Donnie Johnson each added nine.
Chesterton made eight 3-pointers on the night coming from five different players. Palombizio made four.
Gage Ott led LaPorte (5-14, 3-10) with a game-high 19 points. Josh Fleming had 16 and Zach Kiger added 10.
The Trojans were staked to an early lead thanks to solid 3-point shooting. The Trojans hit four treys in the first half, from four different players to lead 20-12 in the early part of the second quarter.
LaPorte went on an 11-2 run to lead 23-22 with three minutes left before halftime. Kiger opened the run with a baseline jumper, and Jacob Jones ended it with a 3-pointer from the wing.
The Trojans took a 29-27 lead at the break on back-to-back hoops from Johnson and Rusboldt in the final 35 seconds of the half.
Andert scored 11 points in the first half for the Trojans.
