PORTAGE | Portage held Michigan City to its fewest points this season, but it wasn’t quite enough to knock the Wolves from the ranks of the unbeaten.

The Times No. 1 Wolves had three players in double figures, led by 15 each from Toni Murphy and Michal Miller, in their 61-47 Duneland Athletic Conference win over the No. 6 Indians on Friday.

“Portage only gives up 37 points per game, so if you look at it that way, we scored 24 points above their defensive average,” Michigan City coach Mike Megyese said.

Keshyana Cooper added a double-double with 14 points and 14 rebounds. She also had three blocks.

Michigan City (5-0, 3-0 DAC) out-rebounded the Indians 43-31. Jameka Collins added nine boards.

The Wolves went on a 12-1 run over a four-minute stretch of the second quarter to take a 32-17 lead with 2:19 left in the half. From there, Portage never got closer than 13 points.

The spurt included transition baskets from Collins and Murphy and a pair of 3-pointers from Miller.

Miller scored 12 of her points in the first half before leaving with an injury late in the third quarter.

Nicki Monahan led the Indians (4-2, 1-2 DAC) with 22 points. She scored 20 of Portage’s 26 second-half points.

“Nicki did what Nicki does,” Megyese said. “She kept them in the ball game. She had a good second half. I thought the first half we did a great job on her. In the second half she was able to find some shots.”

Kaitlin Doud added 10 points for the Indians.
