Scouting The Times 2011 All-Area Boys Soccer Team
First Team
Donovan Cole | Portage
Position: MF
Year: Sr.
Analysis: Portage coach Todd Strom contined to be impressed by his four-year starter. "(His) vision and technical ability are second to none," Strom said.
Zarko Coric | Munster
Position: F
Year: Sr.
Analysis: Probably the best pure scorer in Northwest Indiana, Coric was the only local player to be voted as a first-team all-state selection. Coric scored 25 goals and recorded 13 assists this season, consistently wreaking havoc on opposing defenses no matter what they did to try stopping him. He'll likely play at the next level.
Hayden Fogle | Andrean
Position: MF/F
Year: Sr.
Analysis: Playing midfield and forward, Fogle was equally adept at scoring goals as he was dishing them out. Fogle finished with 23 goals and 14 assists, recording at least one point in all but three games this season. He likely will play at the next level.
Connor Gorny | Andrean
Position: MF
Year: Sr.
Analysis: One of the most talented forwards in the region, Gorny was a big reason Andrean won a sectional championship this season. Gorny finished with six goals and seven assists and will be missed when next season comes around.
Bay Kurtz | Crown Point
Position: MF
Year: So.
Analysis: Crown Point coach JR Rosenbaum called Kurtz "his engine in the midfield," and it's hard to argue with that assessment. Just a sophomore, Kurtz will have another two seasons to keep improving his already sharp skills. Kurtz scored 11 goals and had a team-high 12 assists against very difficult opponents.
Christian Lomeli | Crown Point
Position: GK
Year: Sr.
Analysis: Lomeli played in only five games for the Bulldogs, but there's no question he was the postseason MVP in C.P.'s state-championship season. Lomeli recorded shutouts in both semistate games and the state final, as well as scoring the winning penalty kicks in both semistate games. Coach JR Rosenbaum called Lomeli a high Division I prospect.
Randy Maksimik | Lake Central
Position: D
Year: Sr.
Analysis: Maksimik was part of a Lake Central defense that recorded eight shutouts in a tough schedule. Maksimik proved he can score when called upon, too, as he scored two goals and recorded four assists on the season.
Ben Molnar | Chesterton
Position: F
Year: Sr.
Analysis: The Duneland Athletic Conference MVP had 15 goals and nine assists this season. Great speed and perceived ability to play almost any position on the field. Chesterton coach Jamie Sensibaugh said the Molnar is one of the best players to come out of the program.
Zach Sneiderwine | Crown Point
Position: F
Year: Jr.
Analysis: One of the fastest players in the state, Sneiderwine netted a team-high 14 goals this season while consistently drawing man marks and some double teams. He'll be back next season to continue wreaking havoc on opposing defenses.
Angel Zamudio | Bishop Noll
Position: F
Year: Sr.
Analysis: One of the best forwards ever to come through Northwest Indiana, Zamudio ended his senior season with 23 goals for the Warriors. He'll be sorely missed, but he definitely has the talent to play at the next level.
Tony Zervos | Crown Point
Position: D
Year: Sr.
Analysis: Though short in stature, Zervos' efforts on the defensive side of the ball were one of the biggest contributions to Crown Point's season. An All-District selection, Zervos was part of a defense that allowed just two goals in the entire postseason.
