EAST CHICAGO | E.C. Central ran roughshod over Gavit, shutting out the Gladiators 55-0 on Friday night.

Running back Martayveus Carter ran eight times for 142 yards and two touchdowns, including an 85-yard dash into the end zone. He also broke several tackles and burned defenders with a spin move on a 23-yard touchdown run in the first quarter.

Anthony Hunt rushed for 70 yards and a touchdown, also on eight carries. Quarterback Carlos Fernandez completed all four of his passes for 96 yards, threw for a touchdown and ran for another.

The Cardinals capitalized early off a blocked punt and a fumbled punt return that put them near the goal line. They dashed out to a 35-0 halftime lead -- and continued to blank Gavit in the second half.

Gavit quarterback Tashon Rogers scampered for 44 yards on 13 carries but struggled to establish a passing attack. The Gladiators started to drive the ball downfield in the second half, but one drive ended with a fumble and another with an interception near the end zone.

Gavit had five turnovers, including a fumbled punt that strong safety Jason Stewart recovered and ran in for a touchdown.

East Chicago Central pulled its starters in the second half but continued to light up the scoreboard. Backup quarterback Joe Roggenkamp ran in a 12-yard touchdown with little more than two minutes left in the fourth quarter.
