WHITING | You're probably not going to find anyone more serious behind the plate than Bishop Noll catcher Monica Martin.

If a pitch is a millimeter out of the umpire's strike zone, she has no qualms about asking where it missed.

But when she's hitting at the plate, she's dead silent and as serious as they come, which was evident on Tuesday evening in her team's 7-3 Greater South Shore Conference title-clinching win over Times No. 10 Whiting.

Down 3-1 in the top of the sixth, the Warrior catcher and No. 2 hitter started a five-run rally by smacking her fifth homer of the season over the center field fence.

After a strikeout, cleanup hitter Jade Acevedo followed with her own solo shot over the left field wall.

"I moved back in the box and tried going for a single. The second I hit it I thought it was gone," said Martin, who went 2-for-4 with two RBI. "This has been a good year for Noll. Andie (Fremouw) has stepped this year as our pitcher. We've all worked hard and deserve it."

Times No. 6 Noll (17-3, 12-1) didn't stop there, though, as it strung together four more hits and added three more runs in the inning, which included RBI hits from Kaelyn Czubak and Courtney Keilbania.

The big inning proved to be more than enough for Noll hurler Fremouw (9-3), who allowed just four hits and three unearned runs for the complete-game win.

"We play better when we're down," Fremouw said. "I had a big enough lead and felt more comfortable."

Noll coach Ralph Laramie didn't have any doubt that his team would come back after making back-to-back errors in the fifth, allowing the Oilers (13-3, 10-3) to score two runs in the inning.

"We've done that to quite a few teams," Laramie said. "We don't think we're gonna lose and have confidence in ourselves. Monica's homer was the spark."

Whiting coach Paul Laub had one simple message for his team after the game.

"I told them that we're still a good team," he said. "They have nothing to be embarrassed about because that's a good team with good hitters. I felt confident after the fifth and I think we can play with them, but it was just one bad inning."
