MOROCCO | Anthony Mayers rushed 24 times for 146 yards and two touchdowns Friday night as Bishop Noll coasted to a 34-7 Greater South Shore Conference victory at North Newton.
Warriors quarterback Nick Thrasher threw for 120 yards, all in the first half, including a screen pass to Elijah Golumbeck that went for a 35-yard touchdown to open the scoring 2:25 into the game.
The Warriors (5-4, 5-2) held North Newton without a first down until the opening drive of the third quarter. But three plays after hitting Tyler Richardson on a 24-yard pass for that initial first down, Spartans quarterback Harry Klisiak threw an interception that Josh Rosario returned 26 yards for a touchdown. It was the second interception return for a Noll touchdown.
In the first quarter, Jahari Davis ran one back 59 yards for a TD. Davis added another interception on the ensuing possession, and Vernard Whitfield also had a pick for Noll.
The Spartans struggled offensively in the first half, gaining 9 total yards and not completing a pass. Noll's three first-half interceptions came on successive Klisiak passes.
The Spartans, though rushing for only 13 net yards, managed 259 yards passing after halftime. Richardson gained 178 of those on seven receptions. His 15-yard touchdown reception from Klisiak thwarted Noll's shutout bid with 3:01 left in the game.
North Newton drove inside the Noll 5-yard line twice but turned the ball over -- once on a fumble and once on an incomplete pass.
It was the eighth straight loss for the Spartans (1-8, 0-7).
