HAMMOND | Whiting finally got back to its old tricks offensively on Friday night.
Junior running back Ethan Young ran for 190 yards and three scores and senior quarterback AJ Veloz passed for 211 yards to lead the Times No. 8 Oilers over Noll 42-26 in Greater Southshore Conference action.
The Oilers (5-0, 3-0 GSSC) got back on track offensively on the opening drive, as they went 14 plays for 81 yards, capped by a Young 2-yard run.
Veloz went 6-for-8 on the opening drive and passed for 73 yards, including a 27-yarder to Martin Petruf.
After Noll went three-and-out on its first two drives, the Oilers struck again on a Jesse Maynard 5-yard scoring run, which was set up by a Young 52-yard romp.
Noll (2-3, 2-1) answered with two consecutive long and quick scores from a 56-yard run by junior QB Nick Thrasher and a 40-yard strike from Thrasher to junior wideout Jahari Davis with 5:00 left in the second quarter coming off a Whiting fumble.
On the ensuing kickoff, senior Keegan Rooke returned it 91 yards to put Whiting up 22-13 just 14 seconds later.
The turnover bug hit the host Warriors on their next drive and Whiting capitalized on the Mitch Alicea interception when Veloz ran it in from 1-yard out.
On Noll's first drive of the third quarter, it went six plays for 72 yards, finished by an Elijah Golumbeck 51-yard TD catch from Thrasher to cut the lead to 29-20.
Young scored his second TD of the night on the next drive from five yards out, while Noll had to settle for two 32-yard Aaron Garza field goals to end the third quarter.
The fourth quarter was mainly keep away for the Oilers, as they had the ball for over ten minutes in the period and Young closed out the game with his third TD early in the quarter, this time from three yards away.
