In a 9-0 decision Thursday night, the School City of East Chicago board named E.C. Central golf and tennis coach Trino Cavazos as the new E.C. Central athletic director.
Cavazos, who also teaches social studies at the high school, replaces Bill Kelly.
"I grew up in East Chicago, I went to school in East Chicago, and I plan to stay in East Chicago," said Cavazos, who graduated from Central in 1989. "I know it's going to take a lot of work, but I'm up for it."
Cavazos was picked from a finalist group of 13.
"He was highly recommended from the search committee put together," board president Jesse Gomez said. "His biggest strength is the strategic plan he put before us which included development of the middle school and elementary programs ... to bring in lacrosse as a high school sport."
Cavazos has been employed within the school system for eight years. In addition to coaching golf and tennis, which he both played varsity as a multisport athlete at ECC, he coached basketball at the middle school level.
"I'll likely have to put that aside," Cavazos said of his coaching obligations, "but I'm excited with the job at hand.
"We have excellent facilities ... the second largest basketball gymnasium in the state, a brand new soccer field ... upgrades to our football stadium."
Cavazos also sees great opportunities emerging with the newly forged partnership with Calumet College, which will utilize the soccer field.
