HAMMOND |E.C. Central put a scare into Class 4A No. 5-ranked Logansport for over three quarters at Tuesday's Times Region Roundball Rumble.
Led by Iowa recruit Whitney Jennings' 30 points, the Berries 15-0 fourth-quarter run to pull out a 57-53 victory.
Sophomore guard/forward Tiajaney Hawkins finished with 18 points and 15 rebounds for the Cardinals, which led 47-35 early in the fourth quarter.
Jennings started the rally with a 3-point play and two free throws at 5:23 to close the gap to 47-40. About two minutes later, Jennings found older sister Rachel for a go-ahead 3-pointer, giving Logansport a 50-47 lead with 3:25 left.
Logansport struggled at times in the first three quarters.
Berries coach Jerry Hoover reinforced the need for his team to box out during a second-quarter timeout at the Hammond Civic Center.
E.C. Central had six offensive putbacks in the first half led to 14 points as the Cardinals were tied with the Berries at 30-30.
Cardinals guard Dariyelle Ricks didn't advance to the final round of the Rumble's 3-point Shootout, but she drained a pair 3s in the first half to keep the Cardinals around the lead.
The Cardinals took advantage of four putback baskets in the first quarter to lead the Berries 14-11 after one quarter.
Natisha Jones' putback ended a 8-0 run to give the Cardinals a 8-2 cushion with 4:48 left in the period.
After Logansport regained the lead on two free throws by Whitney Jennings, the Cardinals ended the frame on a 6-2 run. Hawkins had two rebound follows, while Laniah Davis put back Hawkins' missed free-throw attempt for the other bucket.
Jennings led all scorers at the break with 16 points.
