VALPARAISO | The Valparaiso girls soccer team opened the postseason strong Monday night with a 9-0 rout of Class 1A Covenant Christian in the opening game of the Valpo girls soccer sectional.
Sophomore Kathleen Pullins scored the first of her four goals for the Vikings less than a minute into the game when she squeaked the ball past Knights goalkeeper Alyssa Vanderwal.
"It gave us a good start and got us pumped for the rest of the game," Pullins said of her quick shot.
The Vikings (10-4-1) added three more goals in the first half to take a 4-0 lead into halftime.
"It's exciting to see the girls get an opportunity to score," Valparaiso coach Rob Cespedes said.
With a defense that Cespedes said "stayed up a lot," the Knights (8-7, 3-4) were only able to take two shots on goal throughout the game.
With a 5-0 lead, Pullins scored the next three goals for the Vikings.
Senior Kara Webb added the final tally for Valparaiso with four minutes remaining.
The Vikings will meet Kankakee Valley at 5 p.m. on Thursday in the next round of the postseason.
"We're hoping to make a good show (on Thursday)," Cespedes said.
