CULVER | Four was the magic number for South Central and Garrett Walter at Monday's Class A Culver Sectional.
Walter bombed four home runs in two games, blasting two of the Satellites' four dingers in the championship against Triton, as S.C. powered to a 6-1 victory. The title is its fourth in as many years.
"It's surreal," Walter said. "It's weird to think teams don't even win one and we've won four. You feel like it's something we should do automatically."
Walter, who went deep twice in the morning against Oregon-Davis, took Zak Shively over the fence in left and matched with one on in the third as S.C. (15-13) jumped in front 5-0.
"I've been in a huge slump the last couple weeks," Walter said. "I was just trying to put a good part of the barrel on the ball and I found it a couple times. It definitely feels good to break through. Hopefully, we can carry it into the regional. We're not done yet."
Ben Rosebaum, who worked around eight walks for the distance win, added a solo shot along with Adam Clindaniel.
"Garrett's been so frustrated," coach Ron King said. "He's worked on everything. There was nothing fundamentally wrong. I told him it was all in his head. He was thinking too much. I just told him to clear his head a little bit and have some fun. You hit four home runs, I think you're having a little fun. It was nice to see."
Rosebaum had just one 1-2-3 inning and was a batter away from being pulled in the seventh when he loaded the bases. He went 3-1 on Keita Morakawa but got him on a pop up to catcher Josh Mohlke to end it.
"I just told myself to bear down and stay low," Rosebaum said. "It's amazing. I love the guys, the seniors. We've been together so long. Hitting home runs, it's easy to go out there and get the adrenaline flowing. It's the biggest game I've had in my career, for sure."
South Central will face Morgan Township on Saturday in an all-Porter County Conference match-up at the Caston Regional, where the Satellites are defending champions.
"It's nothing I've done. It's a testament to the guys," King said. "This was a great indication of what I thought we'd have this year. When they're on, they're on. When they decide to play, they're very good."
