As we await the spring season that lures us all outside, there are many crafty and artsy activities that we can enjoy indoors. The past few years canvas painting events have become hugely popular — often held at bars and restaurants where ladies gather together to sip wine or cocktails while they get instruction and create their own work of art to hang on a wall.
However, it’s not just grown-ups that can enjoy the fun. Several venues offer the activity for all ages and painting parties are becoming common for the preteen set when it’s birthday time. Here are a few places in the region where you can plan a parent/child painting outing or register your child for a session to let their creative juices flow.
Dyer Park District has a canvas painting class that is available for age 7 and older. Two separate one-day classes remain this season and classes are held from 5:30 to 7 p.m. on Wednesday nights.
“We have been doing these for several years and it has gotten very popular,” said Brandi Jean, parks and recreation clerk. “That’s why the age group was opened up. It was originally for kids, but we had a lot of adults that wants to do it, too.”
The painting classes take place about once a month and each has a different theme with a class of up to 20. A recent class where participants painted a Chicago Cubs logo was so popular that they added a second session. The cost is $16 and all supplies are included. Classes are held at the Dyer Town Hall.
The next scheduled dates for canvas painting are March 22 and April 26. Registration is required and can be done in person, by mail or by phone. Call (219) 865-2505 for more information.
Schererville Parks and Recreation has a similar program. The Cupcakes and Canvas class is for ages 6 to 10, and the next session on April 1 will feature a spring picture with a bunny. Class goes from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. The spring and summer brochure that comes out in early April will list additional sessions.

Other scheduled events are on their monthly online calendar, including a Create with Me program, designed as a parent/child experience. Prices are also discounted when you take the class as a pair.
