Both Habitat for Humanity ReStore sites will hold Earth Day events from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday in Merrillville and Griffith.
Kiera Hagerman, the Lake County Solid Waste Management District's education and public information program manager, will be at the Merrillville site with a book swap. Visitors are encouraged to bring a book they've read to swap for a different title. All leftover books will be up for grabs at the end of the event.
Materials will be upcycled, too, to create bookmarks. She also will provide information about the traveling hazardous waste collection program, the ReUZ Room and other programs at the district's offices on Calumet Avenue in Hammond.
The Merrillville ReStore site also will feature Metro Recycling of Valparaiso and Griffith providing coloring books for kids and fliers on its requirements for dropoffs.
Sandpaper, with locations in Schererville and Valparaiso, will offer upcycling services, showing ReStore customers how to repurpose items purchased.
Cellphones will be collected and distributed to local veterans.
Guests can buy items from Eco Chi Boutique, a Munster consignment shop, which sells anything from gowns to furs back to the public.
Best Buy representatives will discuss the company's appliance recycling program.
If any guest wants to donate to Cars for Homes, they'll get a donation receipt for it in addition to assurances the vehicle will be properly recycled.
In addition, there will be giveaways and raffles. Call 219-940-3216 in Merrillville, 3823 E. Lincoln Highway, or 219-923-7265 in Griffith, 6114 W. Ridge Road, for information.
