Dana Dabagia, curator of Michigan City’s Southern Shore Art Association’s Holiday Art Celebration, likes to think of her gallery’s annual December show as a year-round celebration.

“It’s called the Holiday Art Celebration, but it’s not just holiday items,” she said. “There may be a few holiday things in there, but we have works from the summer through winter. It’s just a bit of everything.”

Celebrating its opening with a reception Friday, “Holiday” is Southern Shore’s annual Christmas-themed exhibition. More than a dozen local artists showcased their creations in last year’s show and Dabagia expects a similar turnout this year.

The works on display are all original works and cover a myriad of medium: everything from paintings, sculptures and photography to jewelry, woodwork, glass and fiber art will be shown in this year’s exhibits.

“Our artists are so talented,” Dabagia said. “We have everything from traditional to contemporary art. And the jewelry is wonderful.”

Additionally, the works at Southern Shore Art Association gallery will be available for sale, which should appeal to many area holiday shoppers.

“A lot of people come in (to the gallery) because they want one-of-a-kind items, and that’s what we promote,” Dabagia said. “Everything here is one-of-a-kind. You won’t see duplicates at all. It’s always been popular, and we’ve always had a really good crowd for opening night and throughout the month.”

Southern Shore’s “Holiday” exhibit is part of the “First Friday” celebration held monthly in Michigan City’s Uptown Arts District. The exhibit is scheduled to run through the end of December.

The Southern Shore Art Association gallery is open noon to 5 p.m. Friday through Sunday.
