One of the newest national dance competitions in the industry is on its way to Merrillville.
Adrenaline Rush Dance Competition, presented by Star Productions' Charlie Blum and dancer/choreographer Lyn Knight, will land at Merrillville's Star Plaza Theatre on Saturday.
"We've recently launched the competition after a year of preparation," said Knight, who has been a studio owner and dancer throughout the last three decades. She's also been at the choreographic helm of Star Productions' big annual community theater productions for the last 10 years.
Adrenaline Rush Dance Competition is currently on a national tour with plans to stop in Detroit, Kansas City, St. Louis, New Orleans and Coral Springs, Fla.
According to Knight, dance competition is garnering much interest these days.
"Dance competition has been a very big business," she said.
Knight said the Adrenaline Rush Dance Competition is different from other contests.
"We have new systems and ways of doing things," she said, adding there are changing backgrounds for dancers to use, instant audience voting, instant scoring, an LED wall and a live DJ on site.
"There's more of a cutting edge flavor to the competition," Knight said.
Competing in Merrillville will be 300 dancers. Age range for competitors, Knight said, is from about 4 to 20 or 21 years old. All teams have already registered for the Merrillville competition but the event is open to spectators.
"We always encourage the general public to come to the event," Knight said. While the audience is largely made up of participants, their friends, teachers, coaches and family members, the event is always a good activity for those who like to see different styles of dance.
Showcased in the competition will be everything from hip-hop and ballet, to tap, urban, musical theater and more.
There are monetary prizes to win as well. An overall winner will receive $1,000 while there are also various other prizes in different divisions. Contestants are rated by three different judges in each city the competition visits.
Knight said, so far, they've gotten great feedback from participants and observers of the event. "And we've gotten great response from people on our social media page about the experience," she said.
