A Christmas Carol

"A Christmas Carol" continues through Dec. 30 at The Goodman Theatre.

For many theater fans, it's just not the holiday season until they see "A Christmas Carol."

The famed Dickens' classic continues to grace the stage at The Goodman Theatre in Chicago. This year's production shouldn't be missed as it's the 40th anniversary of the show that's become a Chicago tradition.

Larry Yando once again brings the grouchy Ebenezer Scrooge to life in Goodman's rendition. It's been 10 years since Yando first stepped into the miserly role and his depiction of Scrooge is one of the best on the current stage. Directing the play this year again is Henry Wishcamper, who's directed the classic for the past five years.

"A Christmas Carol" runs through Dec. 31 in Goodman's The Albert Theater.

The beloved holiday production tells the story of Scrooge and the well-known tale of his encounter with the ghosts of Christmas Past, Present and Yet To Come.

Yando still offers the perfect Scrooge, the mean-spirited elderly man who later transforms himself after encountering the wrongs done in his life as shown to him after visits from his three ghosts.

Goodman's costumes, the set and special effects are fascinating to see. And, as in years past, the theater's cast is ethnically diverse.

In addition to Yando, the cast also stars Ron E. Rains as Bob Cratchit; Ariana Burks as Martha Cratchit; Lisa Gaye Dixon as Ghost of Christmas Present; Joe Faust as Jacob Marley; Sadieh Rifai as Mrs. Cratchit; J. Salome Martinez as Abe; Penelope Walker as Mrs. Fezziweg; Jonah D. Winston as Mr. Fezziweg; Paris Strickland as the first female Tiny Tim; and others.

The holiday favorite will have a special sensory-friendly performance Dec. 30 for families with members who have autism or other social, cognitive and physical challenges. The show will be presented in conjunction with Autism Speaks-Chicago. Tickets for the sensory-friendly performance are $15 to $35.

FYI: "A Christmas Carol" runs through Dec. 30 at The Goodman Theatre, 170 N. Dearborn, Chicago. Tickets for "A Christmas Carol" range in price from $25 to $112. Call 312-443-3800 or visit GoodmanTheatre.org.
