A blend of colorful theatrics and athleticism will descend on stage tonight in Gary.
Cirque Ziva will be performed at 7 p.m. tonight at The West Side Theatre. The production, presented by The West Side Theatre Guild, in association with Delta Sigma Theta Inc. Gary Alumnae Chapter, closes the guild's 2012-2013 season.
"This is a brand new production for us. And it's this type of artistic experience that we're proud to bring to our theater," said Mark Spencer, director of West Side Theatre Guild.
"It's a rich experience, vibrant and visually stimulating," he said, of the production which stars the Golden Dragon Acrobats. Circus fans will see everything from innovative theatrical and athletic feats to acrobatics, traditional dance, hear various contemporary and traditional music, and admire bold and colorful costumes.
Spencer said this type of circus production has never been featured on the guild's stage before. "It's great that this show will appeal to audience members 8 to 80," he added.
"It's not only entertaining but educational," Spencer said. That fits into his and the guild's mission to "teach and entertain" at the same time.
Spencer said he's a fan of these styles of circus shows and likes the "mystifying" feats, the "elements of danger and excitement."
Ending the successful season with such a dynamic show, Spencer said, is fitting.
"I'm very appreciative of our audience," he said.
The West Side Theatre Guild is ending its 17th season of "Serving the Community...One Performance at a Time."
