If you're longing to plan activities and outings to celebrate the festive season with family and friends, there's still time to catch various events, shows and more on the holiday scene.

Throughout Northwest Indiana and Chicagoland, holiday fans can reserve tickets for Christmas-themed shows, see an international display of Christmas trees, listen to carols being sung, go shopping at festive markets and more.

Many of the holiday happenings are taking place through the next week or so and some extend just after the new year.

"A Christmas Carol"

The beloved holiday production, starring Larry Yando, tells the story of Scrooge and the well-known tale of his encounter with the ghosts of Christmas Past, Present and Yet To Come.

"A Wonderful Life: The Musical"

The production, directed by Bill Pullinsi, is based on the Frank Capra film about a desperate George Bailey, who searches for life's meaning during the Yuletide season.

Highland Community Band Christmas Concert

The Highland Community Band performs its Christmas Concert at 7 p.m. today at Highland High School Auditorium, 9135 Erie St., Highland. 219.677.1412. Audiences can enjoy the sounds of the holiday season at this free concert.

"Christopher Wheeldon's The Nutcracker" by The Joffrey Ballet

Christopher Wheeldon's "The Nutcracker" performed by The Joffrey Ballet, runs  through Dec. 30 at The Auditorium Theatre,  50 E. Congress Parkway, Chicago. Tickets are $35 to $165.  Call 312-386-8905 or visit Joffrey.org.

This version of "The Nutcracker" is a re-imagined rendition of the traditional ballet. The story veers from the traditional one, which focuses on Clara, from a high-brow family, and turns its attention to a setting and family during the time of the Columbian Exposition in Chicago.

"Q Brothers Christmas Carol"

"Q Brothers Christmas Carol" is an energetic hip-hop rendition of the holiday classic. The show, performed by Q Brothers Collective, is directed and created by brothers GQ and JQ. The Collective ensemble also stars Jax and Pos. GQ stars as Scrooge and JQ stars as Marley, Belle, the Present and Lil' Tim in the production.

"Ken Ludwig's 'Twas the Night Before Christmas"

A Christmas Story Comes Home

Six animatronic window displays from Macy's Department Store in New York are on display through Jan. 7 at Indiana Welcome Center, 7770 Corinne Dr, in Hammond. The annual display of Christmas trees exhibit titled Christmas Around the World runs through Jan. 7 at The Museum of Science and Industry in Chicago.
