Bonnie Johnson, co-owner of Hammond’s Beatniks on Conkey and member of their Beatnik Babes comedy troupe, says the more, the merrier, when it comes to their current production, “Babes in Boyland.”

For past presentations, the all-female comedy troupe has brought their funny male counterparts into the mix for the occasional skit. For “Boyland,” though, the men will find themselves even more in the Babes’ mix.

“This time they’re bringing some of their own ideas into the show, which is kind of a new twist on it,” Johnson said. “It’s going to be a little bit of a different show for us, which is nice, and I think it’s a good mix. The more people that are up on stage and having fun, the more of a good time the audience is going to have as well. This is going to be non-stop laughter.”

Running Saturday and Sunday at Beatniks, the Babes are the brainchild of Merrillville’s Kim Bernstein, who proposed the concept of the comedy troupe to Johnson when Beatniks first opened their doors at 418 Conkey St. nearly five years ago. Twice a year, the Beatniks Babes bring their brand of off-the-cuff and rehearsed comedy to their namesake stage.

The Babes lineup for “Boyland” is made up of Johnson, Bernstein, Cedar Lake’s Linda Slankard, Sharon Harbert from Griffith and Crystal Kadar from Hammond.

“We are all a little bit on the crazy side,” Johnson said of herself and her fellow Babes. “We are a mixture of ages, so everybody brings something a little different to the table. And we have so much fun just getting together and rehearsing and putting the show together. We’re all silly, and that’s a good way for me to put it.”

For “Boyland,” the Babes and their male guests will set their sights on the holiday season throughout their show.

“Our holiday show is always the best attended (Babes show),” Johnson said. “People like to go out and have fun during the holidays, and are out running around and spending money and trying to get gifts, and we like to poke fun at those things. That makes it a lot of fun for people.”

Due to adult content, “Babes in Boyland” is not recommended for sensitive audiences.
