Student artists gain 'Perspective' with Southern Shore exhibit
Jeannene Anderson, co–curator of Southern Shore Art Association's "Perspectives from Extraordinary Students," was amazed to watch the exhibiting student artists evolve.
"It's a wonderful thing to hear a student say 'I didn't know I could do that,' or 'I hate painting,' and three hours later walk away with a newfound love and sense of pride," she said. "We often heard 'This is the best I've ever done.'"
Running Jan. 6 through 8 at the association's Michigan City gallery, "Perspectives," which showcases art created by Michigan City teenage students with mild special needs, was spearheaded by artist and Southern Shore member Laura Hernandez.
Anderson credited Hernandez with securing a grant earlier this year from the Michigan City Enrichment Corporation, which was used to conduct workshops for the participating Michigan City Public School system students. Over the course of six three–hour sessions held this fall, seven Michigan City students met with association members for workshops and lessons, with "Perspectives" being just one of the fruits of their labor.
For Anderson, the title of the exhibit is fitting.
"The students had ample one–on–one time (with the association artist/instructors) and were able to learn multiple perspectives and techniques," she said. "The students were able to experiment with high-quality art supplies and imagination ran wild."
"Perspectives" is made up of more than three dozen acrylic, pastel and watercolor paintings, mixed media pieces, creating original landscapes, stilllife, anime, portraits and abstract works.
"We hope to create an awareness to the public of the special needs students who are often overlooked," Anderson said of the exhibit. "And the proud students have a unique opportunity to show their talents to the world in the Southern Shore 1,400-square-foot gallery."
Anderson also hopes that "Perspectives" is the first of what becomes an annual showcase for both the budding students and the association.
"The students came away with a real sense of accomplishment, and are eager to take the class again next year," she said.
