Pork lovers will be able to go hog wild sampling a variety of pig-centric items at Portage’s inaugural Baconfest, set for Aug. 24.
Event organizers Danny Hendon and Mike Signorelli are hoping the event can become an annual tradition that will put Portage on the map, as Pierogi Fest has for Whiting and the Blueberry Festival has done for Plymouth.
“Why not bacon?” Hendon said. “People have wonderful memories of bacon. It’s weird, it’s quirky and we want an event that will showcase our town.”
The event, held at Founders Square Park, will offer a little something for everyone. In addition to a variety of food vendors, Bounce N Around will provide inflatables for children. There also will be live music and craft booths.
Buffalo Wild Wings is also sponsoring a “pigskin” flag football tournament to coincide with the event.
Numerous bands will be performing during the event, including Fathom Blue, which gained national attention after performing in a Hurricane Sandy benefit. The group also recently returned from performing a tour in South America.
Other groups include Of Eld, Penny Down, Kelly Scott Nunn and Prose the Antidote.
But the highlight of the festival will be the many bacon-centered dishes, Signorelli said.
J Goose Grill will be offering half pound, foot-long all-beef bacon wrapped hotdogs. They also will offer a homemade bratwurst burger with cheese and bacon and a quarter-pound bison burger with cheese and bacon.
Texas Roadhouse of Portage will be offering pulled pork BBQ and pulled pork sliders.
Hot Diggity Dog will serve the “Belly Buster,” which is a steak burger with egg, sausage, cheese and bacon. They also will feature a reuben with bacon and a Cajun sausage with potato and bacon.
On All Soup’d Up's menu will be bacon cheddar burgers, bacon cheese dogs and homemade bacon cheddar soup.
“We’re going to have an eclectic mix of everything,” Hendon said. “It’s amazing how quickly this has taken off and the positive response we’ve gotten from it. It’s been pretty awesome.”
