Usiku grew up in the Appalachian Mountains and works as an office manager by day
Growing up in rural Logan County in the Appalachian Mountains of West Virginia, Usiku (pronounced oo-SEE-koo), a writer in lives in Thornton, Ill., and goes by just one name, was impressed by the beauty of the area, which encouraged him to write "Eloquence: Rhythm & Renaissance," a book of literary poetry, prose and short stories.
"I was inspired by the natural world that I was a part of," Usiku says.
"The mountains, the trees and where we lived down in the valley. We had creeks that we would play in when I was a child and there were flowers all around. I paid attention to nature because we didn't have movies and technology wasn't easily available."
Usiku says that this book, his first, expresses appreciation and love for self, family, courage, nature, spirit and creative processes.
Interestingly, Usiku earned his undergraduate degree in accounting and a master's degree in management, entrepreneurship and marketing.
"I have no formal training in writing or literature," he says. He works for the Cook County State Attorney's Office as an office manager and writes his poetry and prose during lunch hour and at night.
"I hope to write 10 more books at least," says Usiku who is 75 percent finished with his next book, a collection of children's stories.
"I hope my book shows people how to be true to your purpose and find a place within yourself by connecting to nature."
