Daffodils are one of the first flowers of the spring season.

In Lewis Carroll's "Alice's Adventures in Wonderland," when Alice shrinks in size and finds herself in the White Rabbit's garden, she meets an assortment of talking flowers. When Walt Disney did his animated feature film version in 1951, he included hovering "bread and butterflies" and angry daffodils spilling water on Alice, thinking she must be some sort of weed.

I've already noticed just the green tips of daffodils poking through yards and flower beds.

As a reminder, a year ago, while writing this same themed column for American Cancer Society's Annual Daffodil Day Fund Raiser, I described the "recent string of 80-plus degree temperatures, an instant summer, with outdoor flowerbeds already filled with full bloom daffodils making an early appearance."

Of course, that was the same all-too-early warm 2012 temps that encouraged early blossoms that later froze.

Daffodils are a sign of hope, which is why the yellow flowers' sales are especially appropriate as a fundraiser for cancer research.

Tuesday launches the 40th annual American Cancer Society Daffodil Sales Week.

Now that our American Cancer Society offices in Valparaiso and Merrillville are no more, I tracked down this year's sale locations by contacting the Mishawaka American Cancer Society office, which also is responsible for the Northwest Indiana territory.

The American Cancer Society's Daffodil Days serve as a national fundraiser to aid cancer research, education and patient services.

If like me, you missed advanced ordering, these special daffodils will be available at locations on Tuesday, while supplies last.

For a donation of $10, you can enjoy a bouquet of 10 fresh-cut daffodils while supporting the fight against cancer. There's also the option of one bunch and a vase is available for $15, or two bunches and a vase for $25.

The following sites serve as pickup locations and I'm told will have a limited supply of daffodils available for purchase. Unfortunately, there are even fewer location then last year:
