It's been one year since AquaVor, one of the region's most attention-grabbing nightspots, opened. The owners are hosting special events this month to celebrate.

Set in downtown Hammond at 5260 Hohman Ave., AquaVor has been envisioned as part of an entertainment district revitalization effort according to Ray Rapchak, one of the club owners who said nearly $2 million was invested to convert the space into a nightclub.

For the launch a year ago, the management arranged for actor Mario Lopez to do the club's official grand opening night honors with a big party Dec. 29, 2011.

And Hollywood gossip blogger Perez Hilton flew in Dec. 30, 2011 for a pre-New Year's Eve Party.

And to welcome New Year's Eve in 2011 for the arrival of 2012, it was Mike "The Situation" Sorrentino of "Jersey Shore" who flew in for the fun.

Last weekend, the anniversary celebration events included an appearance by M.E. aka Main Event on Friday for a live performance. And on Saturday, it was Miguel Angel Torres, the American mixed martial artist and former WEC Bantamweight Champion at the nightclub doing an appearance to celebrate his 32nd birthday. Up next, it's Chicago singer Laura, performing Feb. 16, best know for her hit remix of the song "Only in My Dreams."

Stage struck

After I mentioned a theater event in Crown Point in last Sunday's column, Matthew B. Byerly, board member for Crown Point Community Theatre and secretary for Northwest Indiana Excellence in Theatre Foundation wrote me with more details for future regional stage opportunities for readers.

"Dear Mr. Potempa,

A number of years ago, community visionaries came together and formed the Crown Point Community Theatre (CPCT) to promote and support community theater.

We continue to carry out their vision and actively seek community partnerships. For the last several years, CPCT has partnered with the Courthouse Foundation to present a courtroom drama in the historic courtroom. This year, the troupe is putting on a production of Abby Mann's play 'Judgment at Nuremberg,' directed by Rob Kranc and featuring talent from throughout the Region.

It is a dramatization of one of the many real life post WWII Nuremberg trials of high ranking Nazis. Most of the play focuses on the 1948 courtroom trial of four judges who helped to carry out Hitler's decrees.

Proceeds from the production are being split evenly between the theater and the Court House Foundation. Ticket prices are very reasonable: $15 general admission, $12 for students, seniors, and active military personnel. Tickets can be purchased online at brownpapertickets.com/event/300418 or may be reserved via the CPCT phone line at (219) 805-4255. There is a 3 p.m. matinee today.

The courthouse show is only a small part of the offerings CPCT is putting on this year. We have a theater in a converted storefront at 1125 Merrillville Road, where we are offering a number of other shows in the near future. Next month, we will feature the Laura Shaine Cunningham play 'Beautiful Bodies,' about six women who come together for a baby shower and end up learning about each other. Those interested may find out more about CPCT and their other upcoming productions by visiting cpct.biz or learn more about other theatrical efforts throughout Lake, Porter and LaPorte Counties at NIETF.org. Sincerely, Matthew B. Byerly."
