EDITOR'S NOTE: This column has been updated from the version published in Monday's edition of The Times.
He's famed for spending much of his time shirtless to show off his trademark abs and the hours of working out on MTV's hit reality show 'Jersey Shore."
So is it fear of shivers and the arrival of cold January temps in Northwest Indiana that had Mike "The Situation" Sorrentino almost backing out of hosting the big New Year's Eve party for the grand opening weekend of Hammond's new AquaVor nightclub?
It's actually much more than just "keep your shirt on" weather in the region according to Phil Pardus, general manager of AquaVor, Hammond's new nightspot.
After a breakdown in contract negotiations, it appeared that as of Friday morning, The Situation had bailed on his original deal to make the trek to Hammond
"Unless a miracle happens, The Situation is out," Pardus told me Friday morning.
"We just learned the agent we were working with booked him without confirmation of his availability and he is most likely not coming. We just got that information this [Friday] morning. And now, all of that publicity is going to be wrong."
But later that night, by 8 p.m. Friday, Pardus said he had hammered out any problems and he as "ab-solutely" certain The Situation was a greenlight.
"Good News! Mike "The Situation" Sorrentino is IN for our NYE event!" Pardus alerted by email.
"All the contractual negotiations and wrinkles were ironed out and he will be hosting our New Year's Eve Party."
But by 10 p.m. Saturday, faster than MTV "Jersey Shore" castmate Nicole Elizabeth Polizzi could shorten her name to "Snooki," everything had changed yet again according to Pardus. Of course, by this time, my Sunday Off Beat making the announcement had already gone to press.
"Last minute update, unbelievable as it my seem, but Mike 'The Situation' has backed out of his appearance," Pardus lamented.
"I just found out. He apparently refuses to follow through with the contract requirements. He refuses to meet and greet guests, speak to anyone, allow photos or video to be taken of him, allow photos or video to be taken in the nightclub while he is present, or allow any of our liquor sponsors to provide complimentary drinks. He also refuses to provide photos for our use in advertising. DJ Lady Tribe will still perform NYE. When I get new pricing and specials I'll update."
Now apparently, there is yet another update as of Monday afternoon.
Pardus said by 1 p.m. Monday, all of the agreement and contractual back and forth had been agreed upon and Mike "The Situation" will be in Hammond to celebrate New Year's Eve with revelers at AquaVor.
I also received a confirmation from "The Situation's" camp.
"Kindly be advised that this email shall serve as notice that Michael Sorrentino (The Situation) will be appearing at Aquavor Nightclub on Dec. 31, 2011. If you have questions and/or concerns please contact our office and ask for Melissa Sorrentino (our VP of Operations). Sincerely, Marc A. Sorrentino, CEO-MPS Entertainment"
Set in downtown Hammond at 5260 Hohman Ave., AquaVor is envisioned as part of an entertainment district revitalization effort according to Ray Rapchak, one of the club owners who says nearly $2 million was invested to convert the space into a nightclub.
Pardus has arranged for actor Mario Lopez to do the club's official grand opening night honors with a big party for Dec. 29. On Friday, I talked by phone with Lopez, who's the host of NBC's "Extra," and he has confirmed he'll be coming. So I don't think there's a threat of him as a no-show.
It's Hollywood gossip blogger Perez Hilton flying in Dec. 30 for a pre-New Year's Eve Party.
Hilton has already mentioned on his web site about his involvement with making an appearance at AquaVor Dec. 30, so it seems to also be a sealed deal.
