Chicago blues guitar legend Buddy Guy -- a recipient of a prestigious Kennedy Center Honors award aired earlier this week alongside Dustin Hoffman, Led Zeppelin, Natalia Makarova and Indiana’s own David Letterman -- has released “Buddy Guy: Live At Legends” via Silvertone/RCA Records.

The new Dec. 18 release captures Guy’s last live recordings at his now shuttered original Legends blues club in Chicago, from his January 2010 residency there, with capable backing from Rick Hall (guitar), Marty Sammon (keyboards), Orlando Wright (bass) and Tim Austin (drums). Along with the concert performance tracks, “Live At Legends” gives fans three bonus unreleased tunes – “Polka Dot Love,” “Country Boy” and “Coming for You” -- from Guy’s “Living Proof” album sessions.

George “Buddy” Guy came to Chicago from Louisiana in 1957, and after amassing 50 albums in nearly as many years, along with 28 Blues Music Awards, six Grammy Awards, Billboard Music Awards “Century Award,” the first annual “Great Performer of Illinois Award, induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, and now the Kennedy Center Honors, shares the distinction of greatest living legend of the blues along with B.B. King.

Guy is scheduled to meet up again with everyone’s favorite Hoosier talk show host to perform Jan. 16 on the “Late Show with David Letterman”  on CBS-TV.

ALLIGATOR BITES:

Three well known artists signed to Chicago’s Alligator Records blues label have news to share with fans.

Harmonica great James Cotton (currently working on the follow-up to his Grammy-nominated CD “Giant,”) appears in the new independent feature film “Queen City,” starring and directed by Peter McGennis. Blues singer/songwriter/guitarist Susan Tedeschi also stars as the wife of McGennis’ character, Brinker.

Shemekia Copeland, daughter of blues legend Johnny Copeland, got a Grammy Award nod in the “Best Blues Album” category for her newest album, “33 1/3,” from which the song “Ain’t Gonna Be Your Tattoo” (featuring a fiery guitar solo from Buddy Guy) was named one of National Public Radio’s “Favorite Songs of 2012.”

Blues vocalist Janiva Magness – whose newest album “Stronger For It” earned her five Blues Music Awards nominations, including the coveted “B.B. King Entertainer of The Year Award” -- underwent successful surgery on Dec. 13 to repair damage to discs in her neck. Although off the road recovering for the next six weeks, Madness will be back with a full tour schedule in early 2013

MUSIC NOTES:

• Chicago rock stalwarts STYX perform Saturday at the Genesee Theatre in Waukegan and again on Sunday at Star Plaza Theatre in Merrillville. Each concert will offer the band’s fans a chance to win an autographed guitar while helping “Rock ToThe Rescue,” a non-profit organization founded by the band and spearheaded by guitarist/vocalist Tommy Shaw’s daughter, Hannah. At each tour stop, Hannah Shaw picks a local charity to share a percentage of the money raised from $10 tickets for a signed guitar drawing. More: www.styxworld.com.

• Respected studio and touring drummer Alvino Bennett (Robin Trower, Bryan Ferry, Chaka Kahn, etc.) has been spotted on tour in recent weeks with rock legend Dave Mason playing a custom-made Beat Boogie Snare. Beat Boogie Drums is a 10-year-old St. John drum company whose founder, designer, owner Steve Crabtree was a founding member of the once hugely popular ‘70s and ‘80s region band, Mammoth.
