Chicago alt-rock recording/touring group, The Smoking Popes will re-issue their landmark 1995 album, “Born To Quit” this Tuesday (10/23) via Los Angles-based indie label SideOneDummy Record, which they signed with earlier this year. There will be limited amount of color vinyl LPs pressed up in addition to the standard CD format.

The deluxe treatment given to this reissue includes new artwork and new liner notes by Matt Kiba (of Alkaline Trio), promoter Joe Shanahan and comedian Kyle Kinane; track by track analysis by Popes’ frontman Josh Caterer; plus two bonus tracks – a snappy cover of Willie Nelson’s “Angel Flying Too Close To The Ground” and a previously unreleased original, “Blanket In The Park.”

After four years of beating around the Chicagoland club circuit and spitting out a self-recorded indio album, “Born To Quit” put Smoking Popes on the national radar. It was the band’s debut for major label Capitol Records and included their Top 40 (Modern Rock Tracks chart) breakout single, “Need You Around,” featured in the hit film“Clueless.”

After disbanding in 1998, Smoking Popes reunited for a special concert at Chicago’s Metro in 2005 later released on CD/DVD to such acclaim it prompted the band to reformed permanently in 2008. Still going strong, the Smoking Popes celebrate the re-issueing of “Born To Quit” with a live 21 and over 8pm concert this Saturday at the Double Door (1572 N. Milwaukee Ave.) in Chicago.
