Joffrey dazzles once again with 'Othello'
There's less than a week left to see the full-length production of "Othello" presented by The Joffrey Ballet.
The ballet, choreographed by Lar Lubovitch, opened last week and runs through May 5 at Chicago's Auditorium Theatre.
"Othello," one of Shakespeare's greatest tragedies, tells the tale of the noble Moor Othello, Desdemona, Iago, Cassio, Emilia, and Bianca. The plot moves along powerfully in a story of jealousy and revenge.
In addition to Shakespeare's work, Lubovitch also based the production on Geraldo Cintio's "The Moor," and Verdi's "Othello."
The Joffrey dancers are stellar artists able to move the passion-fueled story along powerfully. During the April 27 show, Fabrice Calmels, dancing the role of Othello, appeared a commanding presence on stage as he gave a dynamic performance. Dancing the role of Desdemona, Othello's wife, was April Daly, who performed exquisitely. Also offering powerhouse performances were Matthew Adamczyk as Iago, Aaron Rogers as Cassio, Anastacia Holden as Bianca and Valerie Robin as Emilia.
Rotating the role of Othello and Desdemona throughout the rest of the run will be Dylan Gutierrez as Othello and Victoria Jaiani as Desdemona.
Another important note about the April 27 show was it marked longtime Joffrey member Valerie Robin's last performance prior to retiring from the company. For her last show, Robin fueled her Emilia with great energy and passion. Kudos to Robin for all her wonderful work with The Joffrey. She'll be missed by dance fans.
The Joffrey Ballet will perform "Othello" through May 5 at The Auditorium Theatre, 50 E. Congress Parkway, Chicago. Tickets are $31 to $152. For more information, call (800) 982-2787 or visit ticketmaster.com - Eloise Marie Valadez
