Ice cream and chocolate fans will always satisfy a sweet tooth at Gayety's Chocolates and Ice Cream.

The sweets shop, which originally debuted in 1920 in the South Chicago neighborhood of The Windy City, has locations in Lansing, Ill. and Schererville, Ind. (The Schereville location recently reopened on U.S. 41).

Those who have a taste for quality ice cream, an old-fashioned malt or shake, hand-dipped chocolates and other sweets, will be in their glory perusing the offerings at Gayety's. Blend all of that goodness with a pleasant, retro atmosphere and you have a winning dessert experience.

Established by James Papageorge in 1920 on South Chicago's bustling Commercial Avenue, Gayety's was carried through the decades by his nephew Lee Flessor and now continues with Flessor's son Jim and wife Beth as co-owners of the iconic sweets shop.

This writer's family members have long been fans of Gayety's and have frequented the business since the South Chicago days when PapaGeorge would man the cash register at the entrance of the shop. A trip to Gayety's, whether it was just blocks away from home or miles away, was always something to look forward to.

During a recent visit to the Lansing location for a late afternoon treat, my co-worker and I enjoyed a couple of favorite sundaes. The atmosphere in the shop is definitely welcoming with its pastel colors, sweet aroma and cases of chocolates, various candy and cupcakes on display.

Pictures dating to the South Chicago days and a massive photo of Papageorge situated on the wall near the entrance are nice touches to the decor and bring back memories for those who've been longtime fans.

Upon entering the business, we ordered at the counter and then enjoyed our sundaes in a booth in the middle of the shop. Our sweet selections that day were The Lovers Delight, ($6.75), which features a delicious fruit salad blend, which I also requested to be topped with vanilla syrup along with whipped cream and nuts; and a Muddle Sundae ($6.75), which also starred pecans and hot fudge by request.

Both were ample portions and satisfying. Among other sundaes served at Gayety's are their "World Famous Hot Fudge"; Marshmallow; Banana Split and much more.

In the Gayety's sweets cases, one will find everything from Muddle Pecan Caramel candy to truffles, gummies, nuts and popcorn to gourmet caramel apples and even cupcakes.

If you're looking for a sweet break, Gayety's is a perfect spot for gathering with family and friends or for just a little relaxing time alone to conjure up memories and dig into a bowl of confectionery delight.
