A 'Stupid' film
Global warming film showing at select area theaters Sept. 21
If you're concerned about climate change, Monday is your chance to fast forward to the future for a cinematic, high definition visual on what life on earth might resemble had warnings of global warming not been heeded.
"The Age of Stupid LIVE from New York" is a one-night only, live "green" carpet event simulcast from a solar tent in New York to more than 440 movie theaters nationwide.
The event includes the U.S. debut of the eco doc-drama "The Age of Stupid" starring Oscar-nominated Pete Postlethwaite ("In the Name of the Father," "The Usual Suspects") as a global archivist living in 2055 who takes audiences back through historical footage wondering why we didn't stop global warming when we had a chance. A panel discussion follows the viewing with director Franny Armstrong, actress Gillian Anderson ("The X Files"), and field scientists in the Himalayas and Indonesian rain forest.
Celebrities will also include singer Moby and actress Heather Graham.
Radiohead's Thom Yorke will wrap up the event with an acoustic performance of the film's title track.
The event, presented by NCM Fathom and Spanner Films, will feature a live procession on a green carpet (made of recycled soda bottles) as guests arrive at New York City's Winder Garden by bicycle, solar car, rickshaw, sailboats and other low carbon methods.
The electricity used to power the event will be provided entirely from renewable sources, and all food and drink will be organic and locally sourced.
"Our response to climate change will define our generation, in the same way that ending apartheid, overturning slavery or landing on the moon defined earlier generations," Armstrong said. "At the moment, we are the age of stupid, but there is still time to turn things around."
NCM Fathom Vice President Dan Diamond said this is a real opportunity for moviegoers regardless of what their position on climate change is.
"It's a real chance to get a good look at this perspective and also hear from some of the top experts in the world," he said. "People can walk away feeling more informed and hopefully take whatever actions they feel are necessary to improve their communities."
Diamond, who has seen parts of Armstrong's film, said it presents a unique perspective of what some consider an enormous crisis.
"It will be entertaining, eye-opening and incredibly engaging," he said.
