Best Picture — Beasts of the Southern Wild: "Beasts of the Southern Wild" is a remarkable bit of out-of-nowhere filmmaking that deserves to be seen, especially for Quvenzhane Wallis, 5 years old when she was cast in the role of Hushpuppy. The movie already is out on DVD and Blu-Ray, so you have no real excuse of missing it before Oscar night. It's the tale of an impoverished 6-year-old who lives with her sometimes abusive and sometimes absentee father on a Louisiana bayou. The story really is about how Hushpuppy triumphs amidst being flooded out of "The Bathtub" and amidst the eventual loss of her father using a little bit of fantasy and a strength that belies her age — and how she survived to tell the world: "Once there was a Hushpuppy, and she lived with her daddy in 'The Bathtub.'"
