“American Hustle” was nothing short of a masterpiece – yet because David O. Russell killed it in a big way with “Silver Linings Playbook” the year before, it came off as something of a letdown. (Or maybe it’s because the trailers had been teasing us for months before its release.) If it doesn’t win Best Picture, it still managed to get acting nods in all four categories, a screenplay nomination, a director nod, and Best Picture. From a numbers standpoint, that makes it the best film of the year.
