The magic of classic musical compositions and the precision of circus arts will blend when "Cirque de la Symphonie" takes the stage Sept. 20 at Star Plaza Theatre in Merrillville.
"Cirque de la Symphonie" is Northwest Indiana Symphony Orchestra's opening show of the 2013-2014 season. Kirk Muspratt, music director/conductor of the symphony, said he was looking forward to bringing the show to the region and is happy the cirque act's schedule allowed for the presentation of the special concert.
"They just finished a tour of Australia," Muspratt said of the cirque group so this was a perfect time to have them here.
While no animals will be present on stage, Muspratt said audience members will no doubt be enchanted by the work and artistry of aerial performers, jugglers, contortionists and other artists.
"It's a phenomenal group," he said.
Continuing his theme of making it a priority to "amaze" audiences, Muspratt said the opening concert is perfect to lead the way for the rest of the concert season.
The opening show also includes a gala event featuring a pre-concert dinner and drinks and a post-concert champagne and dessert reception.
"This season of concerts has a lot of variety," Muspratt said. He said he often gets comments from show attendees that they enjoy the varied blend of themes and musical compositions included in every season.
Among tunes on the "Cirque de la Symphonie" concert playlist will be compositions by Tchaikovsky, Bizet, Mendelssohn, Johann Strauss, Bernstein and more.
Tickets for the opening concert are $25 to $65. Gala package is $115 per person in addition to a concert ticket. Proceeds will benefit the Symphony's music and education programs. Concert season subscriptions are still available. For information, call (219) 836-0525 or visit NISOrchestra.org.
