Patrick “Sully” Sullivan, vice president of Chicago-based REB Records, sees the grounds of Michigan City’s Dunes Summer Theatre as the perfect locale to host their first Indiana “Micro Music Mash.”
“There’s a great artistic community in that area and the Dunes is a very unique area,” he said. “I think people in Michigan City and that Indiana area recognize how unique their area is. When we first looked at it and the stage, we thought ‘this is perfect.’ It’s a great venue and you have a lot of diverse people you can appeal to.”
The “Micro Music Mash” comes to Dunes Summer Theatre today and Saturday and July 5 and 6. Sullivan formed REB records with Ryan Black two years ago. Both musicians in their own right, the duo crested REB to help fellow musicians get their art to the masses without the red tape associated with record labels.
Live shows and events such as the upcoming “Mash” is another facet of the relationship between REB and their artists.
“Our goal is to help artists to be able to create and perform without putting them in debt,” Sullivan said. “For the live shows, we basically go into business with the artists themselves with the concept of having a fun show ... the thing we want to do is for everyone to perform together and to make some money so we can afford to keep doing the shows.”
Acts scheduled to perform at REB’s “Mash” include eclectic rockers Theft to the Gallows and Horrible Spaceship, Philadelphia rockers Love Cartel, South Side-based soulstress Nila and turntablist DJ Big Durty. The acts performing at REB’s “Mash” are either label artists or friends of Sullivan and Black.
“The ‘Mash’ is that it has all these genres, and you’re going to have this cross-pollinating between these musicians and artists,” Sullivan said. “It’s for people who listen to all styles of music. People these day’s don’t say ‘I just listen to rock’ or ‘I just listen to rap music.’ Today, everybody listens to everything.”
Sullivan recommended his “Mash” for attendees 12 years of age and older.
