The doo-wop sounds of Harbor Lights will jump into the spotlight Saturday in the Region.
Vocal group Harbor Lights is set to perform at 8 p.m. Saturday at Memorial Opera House in Valparaiso.
""We've played there a couple of times a year for the last four or five years. The opera house has a lot of history attached to it and it's a good fit for us," said George Carl, member of Harbor Lights and the group's manager.
"The music we do is historic also," he said. The group's playlist stars a variety of favorites including tunes such as "The Lion Sleeps Tonight," Under the Boardwalk," "In the Still of Night," "Sh-Boom," "Book of Love," "Sunday Kind of Love," and others.
Harbor Lights stars members Carl, Dave Mitchell, Cheryl De Rosier, Fernando Rodriguez and Jim Calinski.
Carl said there's a great vibe surrounding the doo-wop tunes and audiences always seem to have a good time at their shows. He added the group members like the crowd at the opera house.
"We like to perform locally and the opera house has a wonderful ambiance about it," he said. "We usually sell it out." While Carl said they'll be adding a new batch of oldies to their show, they'll also make sure to perform old favorites that audiences love.
Harbor Lights has also been expanding its concert schedule and recently performed for the first time at The Metropolis in Arlington Heights, Ill. and will perform in Springfield, Ill., in August. A Theatre at the Center engagement is set for later this year as well.
"These are all small theaters (like the opera house)," he said, adding it's a great intimate atmosphere for a concert such as theirs.
Carl said the vocalists in the group always look forward to presenting live shows and they all get along well.
"We have a bond that transcends into the performance arena," he said.
