Christmas joy will ring through Star Plaza Theatre as Northwest Indiana Symphony Orchestra performs its annual holiday concert next week.
The orchestra will present its "Holiday Pops" show at 7:30 p.m. Dec. 6 at Star Plaza Theatre in Merrillville.
"I enjoy the image of all the families coming together for this show," said Kirk Muspratt, symphony conductor.
Muspratt said the seasonal pops concert always attracts a diverse audience and is often many of the audience members' first introduction to a symphonic concert.
"Christmas just isn't Christmas without this show," Muspratt said. "It brings the tradition and feeling of the community and everyone just coming together," he stressed.
During the orchestra's show, music fans will hear a diverse selection of tunes. Traditional holiday favorites to inspirational songs and more will be highlighted. Also featured in the show will be singer Cheryl Wilson and the Northwest Indiana Symphony Chorus, directed by Nancy Menk.
"Cheryl Wilson is a fantastic singer," said Muspratt. Wilson, who's a friend of the conductor, will perform some gospel-inspired tunes.
On the holiday performance roster will be songs such as "Carol of the Bells," "Oh Holy Night," "I'll Be Home for Christmas," "The Nutcracker Suite," "The Prayer," and others. Music from Duke Ellington will also be in the spotlight, Muspratt said.
And there's always sure to be a visit from the Jolly Old Elf.
"Santa always comes to the show. He lands on the roof of the Star Plaza," Muspratt said, with a chuckle.
