It's only a few weeks before Kirk Muspratt picks up his baton to begin another season of presenting engaging orchestral compositions in the region.

Northwest Indiana Symphony Orchestra, under the direction of musical director/conductor Muspratt, will open its 2013-2014 season Sept. 20 with "Cirque de la Symphonie" at Star Plaza Theatre in Merrillville.

"People should be prepared to be amazed once again," said Muspratt, explaining that same motto from last year is carrying over into this season of shows.

"That's something that I keep in mind all the time," he said. The conductor said he's always attuned to making sure the orchestra's programming is interesting and appealing to those with varied musical tastes.

The orchestra's first show definitely fits into that category as it blends classical and modern compositions with the magic of circus arts. Muspratt said with cirque acts being extremely popular now, audiences are open to a show which combines these art forms.

The opening concert also includes a gala event featuring a pre-concert dinner and drinks and a post-concert champagne and dessert reception.

"This season of concerts has a lot of variety," Muspratt said. He said he often gets comments from show attendees that they enjoy the varied blend of themes and musical compositions included in every season.

Fans will have the opportunity to hear everything from eerie-themed sounds in the group's Halloween concert to seasonal favorites in the Holiday Pops show and compositions by Mahler, a dueling piano program and a bluegrass-inspired concert with the orchestra's chorus throughout the season.

Tickets for the opening concert are $25 to $65. Gala package is $115 per person in addition to a concert ticket. Proceeds will benefit the Symphony's music and education programs. Concert season subscriptions are still available. For information, call (219) 836-0525 or visit NISOrchestra.org.
