Teibel's restaurant has long been a bright dining spot in the area.
During the holiday season, the eatery remains a Region dining hot spot not only for its menu of favorite staples but for its festive decor including sparkling trees and toy trains to snowmen, toy soldiers and colorful lights.
The restaurant, co-owned these days by Stephen and Paul Teibel, is celebrating its 84th anniversary. Diners regularly visit the eatery, which stands on the corner of U.S. 41 and Route 30, in Schererville, for not only lunch and dinner meals but for party feasts during the holidays and throughout the year.
Holiday time, according to the owners, has always been a big hit with the Teibel family and that shows in the interior and exterior decorations which abound at the restaurant.
Paul Teibel said the decorations have increased through the years. "They come out for a good meal but there's so much to look at. It's almost as big a draw as the food," he said.
Something new is always added to the decor.
"Every year there are a couple of additions and a couple of pieces that are retired," Teibel said, adding his father Stephen has been collecting holiday decorations for the past four decades.
During a recent Sunday luncheon at Teibel's, the eatery was filled with diners enjoying a meal with friends, family and co-workers.
We were seated in the middle of the room and ordered from the special holiday menu which had a variety of items.
"Our holiday menu has our staple dishes as well as specials," Teibel said. "It's a nice blend of items we've had in the past and a couple of things for the holidays."
Our choices for entrees included the signature Teibel's Chicken Dinner ($16.95) and the combo Chicken and Lake Perch ($25.25). The fried chicken and lake perch have long been popular at the eatery and are the two dishes Teibel's is most famous for.
Both entrees came with a choice of soup or tomato juice, tossed salad or relish plate (starring cole slaw, cottage cheese and pickled beets), roll, potato or rice and ice cream.
We chose the relish plate and enjoyed that appetizer portion with Teibel's special dinner rolls, which are so favored by diners the restaurant also sells them separately on the premises and also makes them available at various grocery stores.
Our meal ended on a sweet note with a dish of peppermint ice cream.
Among other items on the special holiday menu this season are a Roast Turkey Dinner ($18.95); Honey Bourbon Salmon ($19.95); Center Cut Pork Chops, ($18.50); Broiled Filet Mignon ($30.95); Frog Leg Dinner ( $20.95) Gulf Shrimp ($21.95) and more. Kid's meals are also available at the restaurant.
