RENSSELAER | With more than 400 yards of offense and five takeaways on defense, Times No. 5 Rensselaer rolled to a 52-19 sectional opening victory Friday night over Bishop Noll.
The Bombers (8-2), also ranked fifth in the state's Class 2A rankings, will play at North Judson in next week's sectional semifinal.
Quarterback Dylan Wright threw for 140 yards and two touchdowns, and he ran nine times for 48 yards.
Bombers coach Chris Meeks is now 5-0 against Bishop Noll in his 15 years as Rensselaer head coach.
Trevor Hill scored twice for the victors, once on a 28-yard pass from Wright and later on a seven-yard run.
Rylan Arihood carried 13 times for 107 yards for Rensselaer, and Hunter Wright logged a 65-yard fumble recovery after Dalton Murphy forced a loose ball when tackling Noll's Nick Thrasher for a loss.
The Warriors (5-5), who lost on the road for the first time this season, had trouble running the ball against the Bombers.
The Warriors netted only nine yards on 15 rushes before halftime, so they relied on the arm, and occasionally the feet, of junior quarterback Thrasher.
On his first pass of the second quarter, he hit a quick out to Jahari Davis, who scampered 78 yards down the left sideline for Noll's first score. That pulled the Warriors within 22-7 with 11:01 left in the second quarter.
But Thrasher didn't take another snap until 1:27 before halftime -- and after Rensselaer had built a 32-7 lead.
With 22 seconds remaining before halftime, Thrasher was hit out of bounds by a Rensselaer linebacker and left the game.
Backup Anthony Fundukian quarterbacked the Warriors the entire second half, throwing for 119 yards, but he was intercepted three times.
Anthony Mayers scored twice for Noll, including a 90-yard, 21-second kickoff return in the fourth quarter.
