PORTAGE | Tennis sectional favorites Chesterton and Valparaiso took care of business quickly on Wednesday.
The Times No. 3 Trojans did not lose a single game against Boone Grove, and the No. 4 Vikings dropped just two games to Wheeler as both squads recorded 5-0 wins on the opening day of play the Portage Sectional.
Chesterton (16-2) advances to Saturday’s championship match, while Valparaiso (13-3) will take on Portage on Thursday in the other semifinal.
“They came ready to play,” Chesterton coach Gretchen Shinn said. “They were ready to start the postseason.”
The Trojans got 6-0, 6-0 victories across the board against the Wolves. Bobbi Modesto defeated Brittney Ziemniak at No. 1 singles. Meg Modesto beat Stephanie Montreuil at No. 2 singles, and Margaret Shinn beat Lauren Jakubczyk at No. 3 singles.
The duo of JJ Lee and Rachel McCrum won at No. 1 doubles over Rachel Lamb and Jennifer Huerta, and the pair of Sunni Lee and Amanda Susnak took No. 2 doubles over Kristen Buth and Natalie Dziadosz.
The Vikings swept the all the singles matches by 6-0, 6-0 scores. Kelly Kennedy won at No. 1 singles against Shelby Loftus. Caitlin Kennedy defeated Jessica Tym at No. 2 singles, while Rachel Willing beat Sophia Esquivel at No. 3 singles.
“We came out with the right intensity,” Valparaiso coach Tim Shideler said. “We never played Wheeler, so we didn’t know what to expect, but the girls played real well, came out all business. It felt good.”
Both Viking doubles teams recorded 6-1, 6-1 wins against the Bearcats. Kate Spencer and Sonja Schaefer beat Kaylin Foster and Lauren Johnson at No. 1 doubles, and Ava Meyer and Brooke Sever defeated Emily Fekete and Karlee Guerrero at No. 2 doubles.
“Portage is a good team, and we’ll just have to come out and have a good start,” Shideler said of the semifinal matchup against the Indians. “We’ll see if we can play with the lead. That would be nice.”
