LAPORTE | Chesterton’s girls tennis team showed plenty of fight Wednesday, but it was not enough to upset state No. 4 Penn.
The Kingsmen won all five matches to defeat the Trojans 5-0 and win the LaPorte regional championship.
The Trojans finish the season at 18-3, while the Kingsmen improve to 18-1.
“I am proud of the fight that we had, we had a little fire in our bellies,” Chesterton coach Gretchen Shinn said. “We did fight hard on several courts.”
Alexandra Brinker defeated Bobbi Modesto 5-7, 6-3, 6-0 at No. 1 singles. The two were tied 3-3 in the second set before Brinker won the final nine games of the match. It was Modesto’s second loss of the season.
“I got going in the first and I just ran out of gas toward the end,” Modesto said. “It will get you. Anyone can have the skills and hit the shots, but it’s the endurance that really helps you get through.”
At No. 3 singles, Katherine Mader beat Margaret Shinn 7-5, 7-6 (7-4), giving Shinn her first singles loss of the year and her second overall loss of the year.
Shinn led 5-2 in the first set, but Mader came back to take the final five games of the set. Shinn rallied from being down 5-1 to lead 6-5 before Mader eventually won the set in a tiebreak.
Meg Modesto lost to Hayley Snelson 7-5, 6-0 at No. 2 singles. Modesto led 5-4 in the first set, but Snelson won the final nine games of the match to win in straight sets. It was Modesto’s first loss of the season.
Cameron Moore and Haley Meekhof defeated Sunny Lee and Amanda Susnak 6-2, 6-1 to win at No. 2 doubles.
At No. 1 doubles, the duo of Meredith Lee and Madelyn Lee beat JJ Lee and Rachel McCrum 6-0, 6-0.
“They are a nice team,” Shinn said of Penn. "They are a strong team and a deep team.”
In the individual state tournament, Valparaiso’s No.1 doubles team of Kate Larson and Sonja Schaefer lost to Darby Mountford and Alaina Roberts of South Bend St. Joseph’s 6-1, 6-0.
