CRETE | Once Carlos Posada broke the Illinois high school scoring record Tuesday night with a six-goal performance against Rich Central, he didn't let up. He just kept adding on.
Five more goals in Wednesday night's victory against Rich South now places Posada at 168 career goals and atop the record books for high school soccer in Illinois. The previous record was 159.
"It was special," Posada said of the record. "I get a lot of support from everyone. It's nice to have that and know that you have people there."
Posada, who is also the kicker on the Crete football team, will be looking to take his game to a higher level when the Warriors open postseason play next week at the Class 2A Marian Catholic Regional. Crete-Monee is the favorite, and Posada is eager to see if he can achieve something that he has not seen in his four years as a Warrior.
"We have a real good chance of reaching the final," Posada said. "A lot of us, it's our senior year. We know to play hard every game and to take every team serious. I want to get as far as possible. It would be nice to have a regional championship, which I haven't had since I've been here."
If the Warriors are going to move past the regional round, Posada will have to be the difference maker for Crete-Monee. The Warriors field a strong team, including seniors Matt and Ryan Sadowski, Luke and Jake Cogan, and freshman phenom Fernando Aguirre. But Posada will need to be his usual scoring self if the Warriors harbor any thoughts of moving beyond the regional.
"We're playing good," Posada said. "Our chemistry is good. All our players are pretty much healthy, and I think we have a good chance at a regional this year."
Teams at this point have learned to find Posada on the field. Many times, Posada is forced to overcome two and three defenders before getting a chance on goal. And despite the defensive concentration, Posada is still getting his chances and his goals. And when teams start giving Posada his chances, the senior capitalizes, and the Warriors usually win.
"I'm just looking to do my best," Posada said. "Hopefully net a couple goals each game. Give some assists and pass the ball around. Have some possessions and not just go to the goal all the time."
